It’s just galling about this pathetic Trump military parade if it was held at any time, but especially on Independence Day. I watched a fun, lovely fireworks display on Lake Michigan in Evanston, and could half a dozen others along the shore into Chicago. They were warm, affectionate, patriotic and a pleasure -- and through it I kept thinking, "Imagine what this would be like if there were tanks driving through." Horrible.
And worse, Trump not permitting a cost estimate for it all, burying the money it cost. (Previous estimates to include the Trump Military Ego Trip in a parade were over $90.) What we do know is that $2.5 million was taken from the Parks Service, money that was earmarked for park upkeep. All I could think when Trump sent out his “Happy Fourth of July” tweet was to write back “Tanks very much.”
And in the end, it was a paltry turnout at the National Mall, especially considering that this was the Fourth of July, and Washington, D.C. was already full of tourists, and there were TANKS (tanks!) as a cool bonus come-on. But even Big Bird and the Muppets far outdrew the Trump Military Ego Trip for the concert afterwards at the U.S. Capitol.
By the way, was a fun side note, apparently live webcams on the National Mall oddly and unexpectedly got turned off as the poorly-attended Trump Military event was scheduled to begin. Hey, maybe it was just a coincidence. No, really, maybe it was. And maybe, too, the DNC did get hacked by a 400-pound guy living in his parents’ basement…
And as pathetic as it is, it’s even absolutely nothing compared to the sick Trump administration actions with the almost-inhumane treatment of immigrants, kids, unsanitary conditions, and cages – and now we learn of administration plans for more ICE raids and canceling protection for families in the military. And all of it is on the Republican Party.
As the mantra goes -- this is not about Trump. We know who he is. This is about the elected officials of the Republican Party who enable it all. Who are okay with tanks and flyover to politicize Independence Day. Who are okay with the abusive treatment of children and immigrant families. Who are okay with more raids and taking away protections for military families. They're silent about it all. And allow all of it to take place. This is on them, because they could stop it. Easily.
